required, we will be using the 7th edition of the APA manual. There are many on-line resources to assist
<
you in learning to write using APA style. It is not necessary to purchase the APA Manual.

Course Requirements and Methods of Assessment
<
One major outcome of this course is the completion of a well-written, scholarly research paper on a topic
<
of interest within the field of psychology. The topic must be approved by the instructor. The research
<
portion of the paper (excluding title page, abstract, reference list, etc.) must be 15-18 pages in length
<
(total 200 points). Ten percentage points will be deducted for every page above or below the stipulated
<
required length unless permission of instructor was given. The paper must be written in APA format
<
(7th edition), double-spaced throughout, in 12-point font (Times New Roman only) and turned in no
<
later than 11:59 pm on February 22 via Canvas. Papers sent via email will not be accepted. Late
<
papers will be accepted with a 10% deduction in points for each calendar day past the due date. The paper
<
will be evaluated based on writing style, organization, content, adherence to APA format, and overall
<
quality of the work. Spelling, grammar, and development errors will result in a deduction of points from
<
the grade. At least 10 academic sources must be utilized in the writing of the research paper. Approved
<
internet sources may be used in addition to the 10 sources required, but do not qualify as academic
<
sources (unless approved by the professor). At least five of the academic sources must be primary
<
research from peer-reviewed academic journals. This type of source will be discussed in greater detail
<
in class. A five percent reduction in points on the paper will result for every source fewer than the
<
required number in correct APA format (i.e., 9 academic sources = 5% deduction, 8 sources = 10%
<
deduction, etc.)
<
Permissible topics include psychological and biological bases of mental health disorders (including
<
anxiety disorders, mood disorders, somatization disorders, personality disorders, and dissociative
<
disorders), sleep disorders (including delayed or advanced sleep phase syndromes, narcolepsy, REM sleep
<
disorder) or neurocognitive disorders (including Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s Disease, Vascular
<
dementia, Frontotemporal dementia, Lewy Body dementia).

The rubric used in the grading of the final paper is:

Presentation: A formal presentation (20 minutes in length) giving an overview of the research paper is
<
required of every student. A ten percent reduction in points for the presentation will result for every
<
minute above or below the stipulated timeframe. Presentations will take place on the last two meeting
<
dates of the semester. Attendance by all students on presentation days is mandatory. Presentations
<
will be evaluated on clarity, organization, adherence to research paper topic, and overall quality. The
<
grading rubric will be posted on Canvas. Practice presentations are mandatory.

1.) Content = 60%
<
a. Clarity and organization (cohesive, clear, focused, and easy to follow, orients audience to
<
topic and research information, etc.)
<
b. Research content (key points, conclusion, judicious selection of detail, etc.)
<
c. Visual aids (activities and/or visuals/displays are appropriate, well-prepared, engaging,
<
etc.)
<
2.) Delivery = 40%
<
a. Staying within the allotted time period
<
b. Poise
<
c. Familiarity with material
