Prewrite: After reading the first part of Chapter Three in The Practice of Creative Writing, find a scene in your chosen piece of fiction or nonfiction that especially effects you in some way. Maybe you think the conflict is especially tense; maybe you love the setting or the character development; maybe the emotion is intense. Remember that a scene is “a box containing a series of dramatic conflicts, delimited by time. A scene starts at a certain point in time . . . and it presents multiple points of conflict. . . . When you change location . . . you start a new scene” (Sellers, 2017, p. 88).

<
Once you’ve chosen your scene, type it out (slowly!) in a Word document. Using the Comments feature, annotate your scene in the following ways:
<
<
Find one example of each of the four kinds of sentences listed on page 86 of your textbook. Label these by making a comment. Do you see any sentences that don’t seem to fall into those four categories? Label these with a question mark.
<
Find the conflicts and label them as such.
<
Overall, does the scene have a positive or a negative polarity? Do things get better or worse? Make a comment at the very end about this.
<
Find every sentence that describes the setting and label it with the comment “setting.”
