In weeks 4 and 5, complete a multi-week unit on illustrated books for children to demonstrate your understanding of visual analysis and the important place of picture books in children’s literature. (CLOs 1,4) This week, you will complete the Picture Book Annotations. Part 1: Picture Book Annotations (50) DUE WEEK 4 Write annotations for 10 illustrated books on your selected topic (see the list of potential topics in the weekly learning activities) including a bibliographic entry, any awards each book has won, the age range of child it targets (early childhood, early grades, middle grades, young adult), a summary of each plot (2-3 sentences), elements that mark each book’s representation of your selected topic (1-2 sentences), an identification of any key visual features and description of its use of illustration style (2-3 sentences), and finally, if you recommend the book (1 sentence). Your citations must be in MLA or APA format. Use the following template for your work: ENG 353 Annotations_STUDENT NAME.docx Example Annotation Rohmann, Eric. My Friend Rabbit. NY: Scholastic, 2002. Awards: Caldecott winner Age range: early childhood and early grades Eric Rohmann’s My Friend Rabbit combines simple images and sentences to create a humorous story about the lengths friends will go through to help you out of a scrape. Told from the perspective of a frustrated mouse, this story charts two friends’ journey to retrieve a toy plane that has gotten stuck in the tree using a large stack of animals. Rohmann’s use of line, the focus for this bibliography, stands out in this book with the heavily inked cartoon-style lines that are used throughout and often give an illusion of movement. While Rohmann occasionally employs brief sentences to advance the action, most of the storytelling is done through the simple cartoon art pictures with bright colors and heavily inked outlines. The images also carry the humor of the story as readers watch Rabbit carry an elephant, a rhinoceros, a hippo, a deer, an alligator, a bear, and a goose to create an animal tower tall enough to reach the toy plane. I recommend this book for preschool children because it allows preliterate children to read the story through the images.
