For my health communication discussion, I chose a public health communication dealing with safe food preparation. I chose this communication because nutrition and fitness have always been a passion of mine and I enjoy creating healthy meals to eat to get me through my week. With all the cooking I do, it is important to know the basics when it comes to food preparation safety. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention gives four important steps to ensure proper food safety. The four steps include: 1: clean, 2: separate, 3: cook, and 4: chill. I believe the CDC’s message to warrant proper food safety is clear and concise, and easy for most people young and old to read and understand. The communication is simple to follow, and it hits the main points for protecting consumers from any dangers relating to food preparedness.

However, I believe the CDC’s communication to be a little misleading and vague. Yes, the key points are well demonstrated on the website, but the instructions helping to explain each step are unavailable on the visual communication to the public. The public does not want to read an entire article dealing with food safety, so it is important to portray a summarized list under each step for quick and easy access to ensure proper food safety measures are met. For example, I believe it would be beneficial to include more information under step 3 such as:

cooking food to the suggested temperature
<
length of time the food should be cooked for
<
checking the texture and color
<
microwaveable safe?

following recommended cooking procedures from the food company

Explaining each step with a bulleted list of important facts will only help improve the message and the overall literacy regarding overall food safety preparation. Also, with a more educated poster misunderstandings and/or confusion surrounding food safety will hopefully decline thus, improving safe food consumption to the public.
