For this assignment, you should review the readings we have done for our third unit (Monique Wittig, Judith Butler, Adrienne Rich, Naomi Wolf, Esther Newton, Kate Bornstein, and Leslie Feinberg) and consider the different ways in which these writers theorize gender and sexuality.
<
• All seven of these authors examine the intersections among lived identity, personal experience, and public performance, focusing on the moments in which personal and social differences produce conflict or foster creativity.
<
• More importantly, they argue that diverse gender and sexual identities ought to coexist respectfully, affording one another space for dissimilarity even as they act as mutually beneficial influences.
<
• Both gender and sexuality fluctuate in response to social interactions and ideological shifts.
<
• All of these theorists’ work possesses a social message that is tied to its delivery—the ways in which it reaches its audience.
<
<
Next, spend some time listening to conversations in accessible places—perhaps a family member’s phone call, a coffee shop, the library, a conversation between neighbors, or interactions at the grocery store or your workplace. Choose one conversation and take notes on its performative qualities. The purpose of our assignment is to uncover some of the strategies that people use in embodying, performing, projecting, concealing, testing out, or otherwise experiencing a gender or sexual identity. Consider the following questions as you make your observation:
<
• What message does the speaker seek to communicate?
<
• How is that message tied to their physical, vocal, ideological, emotional, or other perceptible identity traits?
<
• What repetitions (ideas, phrases, questions) occur during the conversation?
<
• What body language does the speaker employ? How does their audience respond?
<
• How successful is the speaker in communicating their message? What persuasive tactics do they use?
<
• What tone does the speaker assume?
<
• What attention-getting devices (colorful language, pitch, exclamations, etc.) does the speaker use?
<
• How many ideas does the speaker mention? Which ones stand out and why?
<
<
Write a two-page response in which you analyze this conversation as an example of an identity performance. Be as specific as possible in describing the interactions, keeping in mind that your reader has not witnessed the conversation. What elements of the conversation drew your attention? Why did you initially think it might be suitable for the assignment? What specifically performative elements (body language, tone, repetitions, etc.) do the speakers incorporate?
