1. Gabriela : Record Keeping in NYS Schools: NYS rules/regulations
Suppose you were a teacher at an NYS school. During class time, you receive a message that a parent of one of your students has called for you. You call them back, and they tell you that they’re curious about how their son or daughter is doing in your class. They would like to know about their grades.
Could you provide this information to the parent over the phone?
Would disclosing your student’s information be violating FERPA?
If you feel like you are violating FERPA, how can you politely reject the parents’ request and inform them about the rules?

Zoey RE: Record Keeping in NYS Schools: NYS rules/regulations
Hi, India. I agree with you on your points that are call setting and student’s age. The teacher should verify the parent’s phone number which is same as the record and discuss in secured setting. The teacher should discuss the student’s performance in the classroom or the office without any others in the same room. If the student is under 18, the parents are the natural party. If the student is over 18, the teacher should get the student’s authorization first.
