<br />Speaking or Keeping Silent—Closing a Restaurant Sales at the Boardroom BBQ had slowed for several months. Last year, this was the most profitable restaurant in the chain. Last week, management cut everyone’s hours. Carina thought the restaurant would soon close. Just before her shift, Carina always stops and says “Hi” to the restaurant manager, Jean. They have a good working relationship. Carina helps when Jean needs an extra hand, and Jean tries to schedule her extra hours when Carina needs cash. Jean sometimes uses Carina as a sounding board before presenting a new procedure or policy to the staff. Today, she lingered to ask a question, “Things have been really slow lately. Should I be looking for another job?” “Funny you ask me,” replied Jean. “Our last day of business will be this Saturday. Promise me you won’t tell anyone. I don’t want folks to stop showing up for work because we’re closing! Besides, headquarters directed me to not tell anyone we’re closing until our last day of business.” Carina told Jean that she would not tell anyone about the closing; after all, Jean had trusted her in the past with keeping things quiet. As she started his shift, Carina was having second thoughts. What and how should Carina communicate with her coworkers? With Jean? What and how should Jean communicate?
