At least five sources required, and at least three of them scholarly. (The other two can be popular, but they must be serious and reliable. We’ll discuss this in class. The two pages listed above will not count toward your five-source minimum, but you may quote from them if you wish.)
<
All source material (summary, paraphrase, quotation) must be properly (a) integrated, (b) cited, and (c) documented according to MLA conventions.
<
Plagiarized essays (even a single sentence!) will receive a zero and may not be resubmitted. Essays will be checked by SafeAssign. Do not plagiarize from the Procon.org or Britannica pages listed above.
<
At least 1,000 to 1,250 words required.
<
Submit the finished essay (including the Works Cited page) on both Blackboard and Criterion.

The use of at least five scholarly sources is a major requirement–necessary in order to pass this assignment. Your grade will be deducted 10 points for every missing source. You have officially “used” a source if you have quoted/paraphrased it AND cited it within your essay AND documented it on your Works Cited page.

Tips:
<
<
Construct a basic argument first (a working thesis and some preliminary support), and only then look for source material to help you advance your own argument. Your research might lead you in new directions, and that’s fine, but it’s much easier to start with your own basic argument. Otherwise, you can be overwhelmed with information.
<
Conduct true scholarly research:
<
Avoid Wikipedia, Google, and the like. Use databases to find sources, not the Web.
<
None of the websites linked above may count towards your five-source minimum. You’re free to quote them (if cited and documented), but they don’t count towards your five sources.
<
Avoid repeating unsubstantiated claims made by politicians and pundits. Your evidence should be demonstrable facts, not hearsay or rhetoric.
<
Use the Lawson State Library’s databases to find source material.
<
Your most common type of source will be a scholarly journal article that you’ve located via library database. Internet sources are not appropriate for this assignment.
<
The use of scholarly source material is a major priority for this assignment. It’s necessary in order to pass. A deduction of 10 points will be taken for every missing source. A non-scholarly Internet source will be treated as a missing source.
<
Pay attention to dates. Public policy is always a fluid debate. An article from 2009 might be completely outdated. If you’re looking for hard data to support your argument (annual numbers of executions, for example), find the most up-to-date numbers you can.
<
Beware biased sources. For example, The Heritage Foundation is a conservative think tank, while MoveOn.org is a progressive advocacy organization. Both organizations have a clear political viewpoint and an agenda. This certainly doesn’t make them bad organizations, but they are not a neutral or objective source of reliable evidence. Take a skeptical attitude towards the claims of sources like this. You will need to research the background of non-scholarly sources like these in order to detect bias.
<
After you’ve gotten as far as possible on your own, solicit help from the reference librarians. Their job is to help you.
