What is the Assignment?:
<
<
Annotated bibliographies are useful tools to explain what sources reveal about a
<
particular subject. This is often done with sources you have read and those you have
<
only reviewed. Your annotated bibliography will cover both types of sources. Your
<
annotated bibliography should address one of the following themes in American
<
Women’s History: Working Women; Lesbian, Trans, and Bi Women; Indigenous
<
Women; African American Women; Asian American Women; Latinex Women,
<
Women and Media [Unique topics may be approved by the professor]. Linking this
<
bibliography to the theme you chose for Essay I, or the prompt you selected for
<
Essay II, is very helpful. Your annotated bibliography should include the following:
<
1. Proper Chicago Manual of Style bibliography citation for each source.
<
2. One paragraph explaining the significance of each source in your
<
bibliography to the field of women’s history or US history in general.
<
3. An entry for each of the five course texts: Douglas, Reid Soskin, Kessler-
<
Harris, Moody, and Ulrich.
<
4. Ten additional entries (articles or books) concerning your chosen theme.
<
<
What are the basic requirements for your Annotated Bibliography?:
<
<
4. You correctly cite and use all sources (See handout).
<
5. Follow format guidelines for your Chicago Manual of Style Annotated
<
Bibliography, different from Chicago Manual footnotes style.
<
6. Students are HIGHLY ENCOURAGED to overlap this assignment with either
<
Essay I, Essay II, or both.

Aras, Bultent and Omer Caha. December 2000. “Fethullah Gulen and His Liberal
<
‘Turkish Islam’ Movement.” Middle East Review of International Affairs

Journal. Volume 4, No. 4: 13 pages.

Accessed on 10 January, 2017.
<
Fethullah Gulen has founded a movement that attempts to be modernist,
<
nationalist, Islamic, and democratic all at the same time. The article is a brief
<
survey of Gulen, covering his life and influences, the foundations of the
<
movement, the relationship to the military and Islamic community. The
<
secular elites are covered, but not in any great depth. The authors provide a
<
well reasoned and insightful analysis of the significance of the movement,
<
and conclude that Gulen’s role will be an important one as a religious leader
<
in modern Turkey, despite the multiple conflicting interests of his followers.
<
Ostergaard, Lori and Henrietta Rix Wood. In the Archives of Composition: Writing in
<
High Schools and Normal Schools. Pittsburgh: University of Pittsburgh Press, 2015.
<
Ostergaard and Rix Wood offer a comprehensive orientation to the history of
<
teaching writing in America. The work guides readers through over 100 years of
<
teacher preparation programs at state normal schools and teaching colleges. The
<
work is particularly useful in understanding how female professors, teachers,
<
and students guided and experienced such development.
<
Each annotation should briefly summarize the book or article, offer its key
<
contributions to American women’s history, and explain its significance to
<
the theme of women’s history it illustrates.
<
IMPORTANT: Annotated bibliographies that fail to meet one or more of the
<
basic requirements will receive a failing grade.
